If you find in your household an old rusty trap that you do not plan to use for its intended purpose, do not throw it away. It will make a good blade with a massive handle, which is useful in certain situations. Since the knife will be manufactured by hot forging of metal, then a horn, an anvil and a heavy hammer will be required to work.
The main stages of work
We cut off the excess elements of the trap with a grinder and cut the plate, so that later it can be easily unbent. We heat the bending place in the furnace red-hot, remove the fixing bracket with a chain, and then, picking up a hammer or a small sledgehammer, straighten the central plate on the anvil. The result should be a flat blank.
The working part of the trap acts as a handle. Therefore, we insert the plate into the square hole in the anvil, heat the upper part with a gas burner and turn the handle 180 degrees. Using a grinder on the edge of the plate, we make a point of a wedge-shaped shape. After forging, we process the workpiece on a grinding machine, forming a double-sided blade.
For greater aesthetics, you can polish the surface completely so that the knife looks strict and expensive. But this is optional. After grinding, we again heat the blade in the furnace red-hot and lower it into oil - that is, we temper the steel. Then we “dry” the knife for several hours in the oven. You can wrap leather or ordinary twine on the handle. The result was a double-edged knife.
